Packing Technique
- Wadded paper provides cushion in your boxes, very important.
- Wrap fragile items in paper or bubble wrap before placing in boxes.
- Don't over-pack your boxes, and keep them at 50 pounds or less.
- Pack first those items you won't need until after you are settled into your new location. Place out of the way.
- Mark boxes that won’t be needed during your first week at your new location; this will allow you to prioritize the boxes you unpack first.
- Time allotment: Remember previous moves and how it almost always takes longer to pack than you think it will.
- Label boxes clearly with name of the room the box should go in within your new home or office, along with a brief description of contents.
Moving Electronics
If you no longer have the original packaging for items such as big-screen TVs, use a sturdy carton with plenty of newsprint or Styrofoam. Label the package Extremely Fragile. For computer equipment:
- Before disconnecting all wires and cables, label appropriately. Do not try to pack your computer "partially connected."
- For printers, detach paper holders and remove toner and ink cartridges.
- Treat monitors as you would television screens or mirrors.
- Back up computer files onto external storage devices or discs.
Packing mistakes to avoid:
Don't pack the following items:
- Flammable fluids such as lighter fluid or gasoline
- Chemicals including auto maintenance fluids
- Fireworks
- Paints and paint thinner
- Combustible objects such as oxygen bottles or propane tanks
- Firearms
Consider moving these items yourself:
- Prescription drugs
- Anything you have a strong emotional attachment to
- Important legal documents
